The situation
Daniel operated Cassie’s (cassies.com.au), an adult entertainment business across five Australian locations: New South Wales (Sydney), Victoria, and three additional states [client brief, Sep 2022]. He was ranking adequately for primary metropolitan targets but sought stronger visibility in smaller city and suburban markets.
Engagement: September 26, 2022.
The constraints
The adult industry classification created documented limitations [engagement records, Sep 2022]:
- Citation directories: many declined to work with adult content businesses
- Backlink vendors: same restriction applied
- GMB verification: required exterior business signage photography — difficult for a business without a conventional retail storefront 1
- Competitors: including search keywords directly in their GMB business name field in violation of Google’s guidelines2 — Google was not acting on reports despite them being filed
What the initial audit found
The GMB profile was not optimised — the description was too short and lacked keyword coverage [GBP audit, Sep 2022]. Facebook and LinkedIn business pages were both absent [social audit, Sep 2022]. BrightLocal citation management was already underway for Sydney [BrightLocal account, Sep 2022]3.
What the audit recommended
- GMB description: Expand and optimise within category limitations
- Facebook and LinkedIn business pages: Establish both
- BrightLocal: Continue citation completion for Sydney 3
- Competitor name-stuffing: Do not replicate — long-term enforcement risk outweighs short-term advantage 2
- Secondary markets without a physical GBP listing: On-page location targeting and blog posts
What this demonstrates
Constraint mapping first — what’s available, what isn’t, and what can realistically be done within those limits — is the correct approach when standard playbook tools are unavailable.
